Charles D. Jones Description

CHARLES D. JONES

Charles D. Jones is an artist/musician living and working in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he designs, prints, and binds fine press and artist’s books.  He is Professor Emeritus at Stephen F. Austin State University where he taught Printmaking, Drawing, Mexican Art History and the Art of The Book from 1971—2011. During his tenure he was named a Regent’s Professor, received the Distinguished Professor Alumni Award, and a Teaching Excellence Award. He is now the Director and Master Printer for the LaNana Creek Press in the College of Fine Arts, as well as continuing to write and work in the other printmaking media. He has a Master of Arts degree from New Mexico Highlands University, and the Master of Fine Arts Degree from the Universidad de las Americas, Mexico D.F.

Jones has been an active exhibiting artist throughout his career with more than 30 one-person exhibitions.  These solo exhibitions have been mounted at:  Novosibirsk, Nizny Tagil and Ufa, Russia; Paris and Rennes, France, England, Holland, Italy, and Mexico; The Museum of Contemporary American Indian Art, Santa Fe, NM; The Museum of Printing History, Houston, TX; Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler, TX; Museum of East Texas, Lufkin, TX; Longview Museum and Arts Center, Longview, TX; and The Galveston Art Center, Galveston, TX.

Jones is an active book artist specializing in fine press printing and binding works that include relief printed images with poetry and short prose. In 1998, Jones assisted in founding the LaNana Creek Press as the fine arts press of Stephen F. Austin State University, where he serves as Director and Printer with David A. Lewis as Editor. Using alternative and traditional printing and binding methods, LaNana Creek Press produces limited edition books in the fine press tradition. Each year, the Press publishes one or two major books and produces a number of less ambitious publications. LaNana Creek Press provides SFA faculty and students rare opportunities to work together on collaborative projects. LaNana Creek Press has quickly established a reputation for innovation and quality. His books under the imprint, LaNana Creek Press, are in the collection of the Pushkin Museum, Moscow, Russia, the Bodleian Library, Oxford University, the Victoria & Albert Library, London, England, the National Library of Taiwan as well as many Special Collections Libraries throughout the United States. His book of the Vietnam war, Chopper Blues, was awarded the International Book Prize for Military History in 2013 by the Los Angeles Book News.

In 2016, a comprehensive monograph was released titled East Texas Impressions: The Art of Charles D. Jones, featuring his drawings, prints and paintings throughout the course of his career over the past fifty years. Subjects range from blues musicians to modern authors, horses to insects, and flora of East Texas.  The publication accompanied a major retrospective exhibition at The Cole Art Center at the Old Opera House in Nachodoches, TX.
