Don Localio Description

Contemporary artist Don Localio is an abstract expressionist action painter, painting in the grand style of painting, a romantic homage to past and present artists.  While Localio’s gestural compositions are related to abstract expressionism, his imagery and use of color are very contemporary and his language within his works is highly personal.  Localio’s evolution in his art has been natural, focusing on the product of the artist’s emotions and developing sensibility through art.

Localio is no stranger to the Houston art scene having received his BFA from the University of Houston, where he studied under Houston’s renowned abstract artist Richard Stout. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Localio was frequently exhibited in Houston by Meredith Long Gallery, including an pivotal show of abstract art in 1981 where his work exhibited alongside works by 20th century masters, including Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, and Ellsworth Kelley. Localio left Houston in the early 1980s to pursue his MFA from the Maryland institute College of Art (MICA), followed by time in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.  After almost 25 years, Localio returned to Houston in 2012.  Over the past five years since his return to Houston, Localio has created an impressive body of work ranging from powerful large-scale canvases to intimate, small scale paintings equally captivating.  In his first exhibition William Reaves | Sarah Foltz Fine Art, Don Localio Recent Paintings: A Journey of Love and Passion focuses on this most recent body of work, showcasing Localio’s distinct and recognizable style—one that is full of energy and dramatic color, using a richer, more symbolic approach to abstraction.
