From April 13 – May 5, Reaves | Foltz Fine Art presents two concurrent solo exhibitions—Lee Jamison: Ode to East Texas and E. Dan Klepper: The West Texas Mystique—a splendid pairing of exhibitions underscoring the yin and yang of both East and West Texas.

Demonstrating the fact that Texas is a “state of contrast,” and just in time for Fotofest 2018, photographer E. Dan Klepper employs his dynamic lens to bring the expanses of West Texas to life in grand art form.  Klepper’s contemporary photographs were taken while living off the grid in Marathon, Texas, just outside Big Bend National Park, and many of the works included in his show come from his recently published book Why the Raven Calls the Canyon, which documents nearly a decade of living in one of the most secluded areas of the state. During that time the artist photographed lightning storms, moonrises, and abandoned man-made structures to study themes including time, space, and perception. “Sometimes I look for simple forms in the landscape that are natural or products of chance, and then I study how light, darkness, and the passage of time define their meanings,” Klepper says. The show includes singular photos as well as photo mosaics and images paired together to tell a story.  His minimalist aesthetic gives a sense of majesty and grandness to the landscape.

E. Dan Klepper is a fine art photographer and writer based in the west Texas town of Marathon, fifty miles north of Big Bend National Park, where he exhibits his art and photography at Klepper Gallery. Klepper’s photographs have been featured in numerous books and magazines including “In Sight”, the online photography magazine for The Washington Post, and his large-scale works of photo-based art can be found in collections across the state. Klepper’s experimental videos, produced throughout the 1980’s, have been showcased in festivals and exhibitions in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His book of fine art photography and essays titled Why the Raven Calls the Canyon, is available from Texas A&M University Press.

In his first solo exhibition at Reaves |Foltz Fine Art, we are honored to present the work of this incredible photographer to Houston and to our gallery patrons as part of our Fotofest 2018 programming.
